An official local design frost depth is an input. It cannot be reliably calculated from today’s weather or a country-wide average.
1. Get the correct local design input
Ask the building authority or water utility for the applicable frost design value, pipe-cover requirement and measurement convention. Record the document and location it applies to. Check whether the depth is measured from finished ground to the pipe crown, centreline or footing underside.
Site exposure matters: a cleared driveway, sheltered garden and heated building edge do not experience identical conditions. Changes to finished grade can reduce cover after a pipe has been installed. Our calculator deliberately starts with a supplied cover requirement; it does not manufacture a frost map.
2. Understand the foundation choice
Frost-protected shallow foundations use designed insulation to control freezing around a footing. They are an alternative to some deeper foundation arrangements, not permission to put any slab near the surface. The design depends on conditions including climate and whether the building is heated.
Frost is only one part of foundation design. Bearing capacity, settlement, groundwater, slope and building loads remain separate checks. A tool that adds 300 mm to a frost value cannot size a foundation. Take the soil investigation and proposed finished levels to a qualified local designer.

Once the required cover is known, distinguish it from total excavation depth. For cover measured to the top of a pipe, add the outside pipe diameter and the bedding depth to obtain an illustrative trench-bottom level. Fittings or a specified bedding system may need additional space.
A pipe protected by insulation or heat tracing needs a documented design. Consider the power-off case: the protection may fail during the same outage that stops the well pump. Do not use this arithmetic to design trench shoring or enter an unsupported excavation.
4. Make a pre-excavation record
Draw the route in plan and section, with surveyed reference levels. Show crossings, valves, building entries and maintenance access. A written sketch makes conflicting assumptions visible before work begins.
- Locate existing utilities through the local service.
- Obtain the applicable cover and frost criteria.
- Confirm final grade along the whole route.
- Agree bedding, pipe material and traffic-load requirements.
- Record installed levels and photograph the route before backfill.

Worked example
A trench-depth example, not a frost recommendation
Assume a supplied cover requirement of 1.20 m, a 32 mm outside-diameter pipe and 100 mm of bedding.
Trench depth = 1.20 + 0.032 + 0.10 = 1.332 m below finished grade
If the ground is later lowered by 0.15 m, cover drops to 1.05 m. Check the final landscape level, not just the surface on installation day.
